AUCTION : 1010

Lot#: 580

DESCRIPTION: New Hampshire, Striking Lyre Banjo, certainly by Abiel Chandler of Concord, NH, the dial signed "Smith", the retailer, C.1835
CONDITION: similar lyre examples are found in nearly every reference book, including those by Parsons, Nutting and Palmer, however we feel that none are as correct nor as original as this one. Reference book photos show similar clocks with various replaced hands, bezels, finials and tablets, while this one, other than replaced iron weights, is about as "good as it gets". Original reverse painted tablets are still held in by their original glue blocks. A minor dry split at the bottom of the carved panel could be repaired, but not without removing the original tablet and glue blocks holding it in place. The closest comparable example is shown in Palmer's "Book of American Clocks", fig 163. Ht 41"
ESTIMATE: $14000 - $18000
PRICE SOLD: $29000
